Easy Commute

Commuters living in other parts of Houston might be getting jealous, because the driving outlook for Katy residents keeps improving. Most recently, the Harris County Toll Road Authority opened the Katy Tollway/Managed Lanes from the 610 Loop to Highway 6. With construction along the main lanes of the Katy Freeway now complete, and with the Westpark Tollway providing an express alternate route to the Galleria/Post Oak, Katy commuting is really on a roll. Using convenient EZ TAG technology, you don't have to waste time in tollbooths - just whiz right through. So now, you're at the Energy Corridor in about 23 minutes, the Galleria in about 30 minutes, and the Texas Medical Center within an hour or so*.

RECREATION

Fun comes in all forms in the Cinco Ranch® community. You can sit quietly in a park. Or discover the solitude of nature along the Bayou Nature Trail. Of course, if you want to whoop it up, the opportunities are almost endless. Play a round of golf. Enjoy the fun at The Lake House. Go full speed down a water slide. Or invent your very own form of fun.

lake-house-pool.jpg

The Lake House Pool

Calling this wonderful attraction a mere swimming pool is something of an understatement. The Lake House pool is saline, which means it's healthier and more environmentally friendly than a chlorine pool. With a large pool, a splash pad, a children's pool, and two water slides, every member of the family is bound to be happy. Be sure to catch the Dive-In Movie series during the summer, brought to you by the Cinco Community Council. Just bring an inner tube, jump in, and get ready to watch your favorite aquatic-themed movie. (Sorry, no popcorn allowed in the pool!)

Caterpillar. Chrysalis. Butterfly. Chances are, even if you don't know the lifecycle of a butterfly, your child does. This is just one of the things little ones will discover at the Children's Garden, a special place where kids are encouraged to use their imaginations, outside in the fresh air. Your nature experts can scramble over boulders and fallen timbers and even explore a dry streambed. It's an afternoon of wonder (and education), under a canopy of pines that will hopefully inspire a lifelong love of nature.

Thinking Green

Green isn't just another fad. It's a way of living and celebrating the place we call home. Green is about preserving the rich tradition and beauty of this land while at the same time providing a healthy lifestyle for the people who live here.

Here you can learn a few things that Cinco Ranch® is doing in new parts of the community to make this a healthier and safer place to live.

conservation.jpg

Conservation

Water is a precious resource and we do all we can to conserve it:

  • Landscaping in newer areas feature wildflower reserves that require less irrigation, fertilizer, and mowing than turf grass.
  • New homes feature Bermuda grass to reduce the need for irrigation.
  • Homeowners are encouraged to plant trees to increase shade.
  • The Cinco Ranch® community has a tree farm to cultivate trees to plant in common areas.
  • An irrigation control system maximizes irrigation efficiency.
  • A sanitary wastewater reuse system in newer sections of the Cinco Ranch community provide a significant amount of irrigation water for common areas, greatly reducing the need for pumping.

LIFE IN CINCO

Thinking Green

motivation.jpg

Motivation

Educating people is the first step in encouraging people to make lifestyle changes.

  • Two of the main focuses of CincoLife, the community support organization, are the environment and education.
  • Annual Arbor Day celebrations in the Cinco Ranch® community teach residents of all ages the importance of trees.
  • Storm water education placards placed on storm sewer inlets discourage the dumping of liquid or solid substances into the storm water drainage system.

LIFE IN CINCO

Thinking Green

recycle.jpg

Recycling

  • New community buildings include indoor recycling areas.
  • Curbside recycling is available for plastics, aluminum and paper for all Cinco Ranch® homes.
  • A hazardous waste recycling program is currently offered through Fort Bend County.
  • Recycling information is posted on the community Intranet.

LIFE IN CINCO

Thinking Green

Living

  • The Cinco Ranch® community plan incorporates miles of walking trails that connect to recreation centers and schools to encourage residents to travel without their cars.
  • The newest community recreation center features a pool and tennis courts to encourage an active and healthier lifestyle.
  • The Lake House pool is a saline pool, which is less expensive, healthier, and less harmful to the environment than the typical chlorinated pool.

LIFE IN CINCO

Thinking Green

landscape.jpg

Landscape

  • Wetland shelves are located along the banks of Spring Lake so that rainwater runoff enters a natural filtering system through the plants before returning to the lake.
  • Water quality features include settling basins that act as a filtering system for debris and sediment removal.
  • Organic fertilizer is used on all ditches, waterways, and common areas in newer areas of the Cinco Ranch® community.

Building

The Lake House, a gathering place on the banks of Spring Lake, was designed and built with green building practices. It sets a standard for future projects in the Cinco Ranch® community.

  • The Lake House was built to LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) specifications. The Lake House has submitted an application for Silver LEED certification.
  • The Lake House parking lot features bioswales (surface drainage channels) that incorporate native wetland plantings that act as a natural filtration system to help trap oil residue, pesticides and other pollutants.
  • A rainwater cistern collects roof runoff from The Lake House. The rainwater is used for irrigation purposes in the surrounding landscape.
  • All Cinco Ranch Southwest builders are required to meet ENERGY STAR® standards and to become members of the Greater Houston Builders Association Green Builders Program.

LIFE IN CINCO

Thinking Green

whatyoucan.jpg

What you can do

Green starts with you. Here are a few easy ways you can help protect the environment. (And hopefully save some time, money, and resources too!)

  • Be cool. Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120.
  • It's a wrap. Wrap your water heater in an insulated blanket.
  • Out = Off. Turn down or shut off your water heater when you will be away for extended periods.
  • Lights out. Turn off lights not needed when leaving a room - always.
  • Goodbye lint. Clean the lint filter in your dryer after every load so that it dries more efficiently.
  • Follow the star. Choose appliances with the ENERGY STAR® label to save energy.
  • Lighten up. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs to save money and energy.
  • Arbor Day is every day. Plant trees to shade your home.
  • Clean and simple. Avoid toxic cleaners and consider alternatives like baking soda, scouring pads, water, or a little more elbow grease.
  • The daily grind. Use a ceramic coffee mug instead of a disposable cup.
  • The only way to pay. Use an online bill pay service to save paper, envelopes, and stamps.
  • Ditch the car. Use the greenbelt paths. Walk or ride your bike instead of driving, whenever possible.
  • More is less. Buying foodstuffs in bulk from loose bins saves on packaging.
  • Go fine. Use cloth napkins instead of paper ones.
  • Bag it. Bring a cloth bag when you shop instead of using store provided paper or plastic ones.
